The Canada Bread Co. was founded in Toronto in the 1880s. The company produced the ideal loaf for fancy sandwiches: a square block from which the crust could be trimmed with little waste. Illustrations accompany many of the 42 recipes in the booklet. For “the unexpected caller in the afternoon or evening … dainty and appetizing sandwiches can usually be made with whatever happens to be in the refrigerator at the time.”
