(Driver O84.1)<\/p>\n<p>St. Luke\u2019s Anglican Cathedral was established in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, in 1870. No copies of the first (1898) and second (1904) editions of <em>Culinary landmarks<\/em> have come to light. The preface is signed by Annie M. Reid, president of the Woman\u2019s Auxiliary.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the recipes are signed by the contributors who include Miss Gertrude and Mrs. B. J. Clergue whose cookbook <em>British, French, Italian, Russian, Belgian<\/em> cookery (Montreal: 1916) was widely distributed during World War I. From the Preface: \u201cIt is not a haphazard collection gathered at random, but has been made up from the choicest bits of the best experience of the members of St. Luke\u2019s Woman\u2019s Auxiliary and their friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Index to recipes p. 201 to 204. Illustrated advertisements throughout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prize Doughnuts<\/strong><br \/>\nOne cup of sugar, one cup of milk;<br \/>\nTwo eggs beaten fine as silk.<br \/>\nSalt and nutmeg (lemon\u2019ll do);<br \/>\nOf baking powder, teaspoons two.<br \/>\nLightly stir the flour in;<br \/>\nRoll on pie board not too thin;<br \/>\nCut in diamonds, twists or rings<br \/>\nDrop with care the doughy things<br \/>\nInto fat that briskly swells<br \/>\nEvenly the spongy cells.<br \/>\nWatch with care the time for turning;<br \/>\nFry them brown \u2013 just short of burning.<br \/>\nRoll in sugar, serve when cool,<br \/>\nPrice \u2013 a quarter for this rule.
